It’s cold season again. As the weather gets colder and the nights get longer, it seems like everybody’s getting sick. Here are some foods to help fight off colds and their symptoms.
Oily fish
Fish like salmon, tuna, mackerel and trout are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. This can help reduce harmful inflammation in the body which can affect the functioning of the immune system.
Dark chocolate
Finally, a good excuse to treat yourself to your favourite snack. Cocoa contains a chemical called theobromine which helps fight off the symptoms of colds by blocking the sensory nerves. If you want to enjoy the benefits of cocoa, stick to a bite-sized portion of chocolate with a cocoa content of 70% or higher.
Leafy Greens
The darker the greens, the higher the nutrient content. Go for vegetables like spinach, broccoli, kale or bok choy. These vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which support general health and immunity.
Honey
Honey has been used for centuries in the prevention and treatment of cold and flu. With an abundance of antioxidant, antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, honey works to fight off the cold virus and its symptoms.
