On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, many Australians will pause and observe a minute of silence for those lost in war.

This Wednesday marks Remembrance Day in Australia, the anniversary of the Armistice treaty ending World War I and a day of reflection, and will be marked across the country by services in schools and war memorials, conducted by RSL clubs. According to the Returned Services League of New South Wales, the idea for a minute’s silence was originally proposed by Edward Honey, an Australian journalist working in Fleet Street. On the first anniversary of the Armistice in 1919, King George V personally requested that all people in the British Empire were to stop normal activities for two minutes of reflection on the hour.

Events will be carried out across the country. If you want to get involved, here are a few local suggestions.
