As the 2018 Ku-ring-gai council Seniors Festival draws to a close, a youth photography competition display continues to celebrate the lives of those in the local community.
The A Moment in Their Life competition opened to 12-21 year-old budding photographers. They were encouraged to take a photo of an older person in the community that depicts ‘a moment in their life’.
The purpose of the photo is to tell the audience about how that person typically spends their day to reveal something meaningful about their life and promote greater understanding across generations.
“A Moment in Their Life is a great way to give young people real insight into the lives of older people,” said Ku-ring-gai Mayor Jennifer Anderson.
The competition entries closed March 26, and the photographs are still currently on display at the St Ives Shopping Village until Friday April 20.
The images submitted were described as “striking” by Sally Williams from Ku-ring-gai Council.

The winner was announced April 11 by Mayor Anderson at the opening ceremony of the Festival. First prize was $500, second prize was a $100 St Ives Shopping voucher and third prize was a $50 St Ives Shopping voucher.
A second competition is also open to choose from the contestants of the competition for the prize of Popular People’s Choice Awards, photographers will have the opportunity to win a $50 voucher.
A total of thirteen photos were selected from the entries to the A Moment in Their Life competition. They are available on the council’s Facebook page, where members of the community are encouraged to vote for their favourite. The winner will be announced at the closing of the Festival on Monday April 23.

The competitions are part of the 2018 Seniors Festival which has been running for seven weeks since February 28 and wraps up the festivities on April 23. It also coincides with Youth Week, which will be running from the April 13-22, 2018.
